Why Vegan?

"Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals." - The Vegan Society

For all their lives, animals farmed for the satisfaction of human taste pleasure as well as utility are subjected to horrors that are often kept out of sight and out of mind. We are often told that the animals we subject to cruelty are nothing more than drones, beings with little cognitive function that cannot even understand what is happening to them. This could not be further from the truth. Animals are conscious; they feel joy, love, and ultimately pain and suffering. We are taught as children that they must be respected and looked at with wonder, yet when it comes to deciding whether they deserve to live lives free of exploitation, humans commonly brush their capacity for suffering to the side in the name of a sandwich.

It's time we stop pretending we have the authority to decide whether a conscious, thinking, feeling being deserves to die. Collective change is the only way to ensure that humanity stops forcefully breeding, exploiting, and murdering sentient creatures that want nothing more than to live.

Do animals REALLY feel? Are they REALLY conscious?
